The quote is most likely due to George Santayana, and in its original form it read, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’
Yes, they need to LEARN about the past so they can appreciate the future. They need to learn the past because people much greater than them have struggled, lived, survived and died to give them the opportunities that they cannot name, cite or truly appreciate. They need to learn in order to gain that sense of SELF that they are always screaming that ‘some other group of people/peoples have taken from them.’ Yet, now that they have the freedom to make change and better themselves they have chosen not to [not all, but some – look at the public education and graduation rates, test scores, and factor in attitudes towards education]. Every time you turn around when something goes wrong, they want to physically fight. Some battles cannot be won by physical confrontation. Most battles are won by those who were able to out think and out maneuver the opposing side.
Old folks use to tell us, ‘free your mind and you ass will follow.’ The same thing still and will always holds true. Without the whole story, you cannot make a sound decision or determination. Don’t fall into mob mentality, that’s what some people want and are expecting … do the unexpected. Knowledge is the real power and it can set you free.
