Well I consider myself Haitian American even though I was born in the States because it’s my way of holding on to my culture. I speak French and Creole to preserve the culture and I still practice certain traditions. Although I’m technically American my patents are Haitian and I am a piece of them therefore I attach Haitian along with the American lol
I wasnot not born in America, so technically I wouldnt want to be referred to as just an American. Me personally, I prefer the term African american over American, because it signifies history. Before we were Americans we were Africans. Its alway important to remember your history.
I am of African, Jamaican, American descent and a whole lot of other stuff – who was fortunate enough to be born in America. Some people will look me and see my blackness, and look no further. Some people will see me ‘as a mere woman,’ and look no further. Others will see ‘an American,’ and look no further. Pity them all.
I am both: I am American and I am an African American, proud of it, baby!
